Milk being poured into two coffee cups on a brown wooden table at KULT. Gosforth

The Great Oat vs. Whole Milk Debate: A Totally Unscientific Investigation

Ask ten people in Gosforth how they take their coffee and you will get ten different answers. Sooner or later, though, almost everyone lands on the same question. Oat milk vs whole milk: which one actually makes the better cup? It is easily the most common debate we hear across the counter at KULT. So we decided to give it the serious, rigorous and entirely unscientific investigation it deserves.

The case for oat milk

Team Oat will tell you it is creamier than you expect and gently sweet. Better still, it sits alongside a strong espresso without fighting it for attention. Barista oat milks are also built for steaming, so they froth into a glossy microfoam that holds its shape. That makes for a very respectable latte art attempt, even from us on a Monday morning.

It brings its own flavour to the party, too. That faint cereal sweetness works beautifully with the chocolate and caramel notes in a darker roast. As a result, plenty of our regulars order oat by default rather than as a substitute for anything.

The case for whole milk

Team Whole Milk stands firmly on tradition, and they have a point. The flat white was built around dairy. Fat and protein give whole milk a silky, rounded texture that plant milks still struggle to copy exactly. Steamed properly, it also produces a natural sweetness that comes from the milk itself. So if you want the espresso to be the loudest thing in the cup, whole milk steps back politely and lets it speak.

Oat milk vs whole milk: what actually changes the taste

Here is the slightly unsatisfying truth. The milk is only part of the story. Steam temperature matters enormously, because both oat and dairy turn thin and papery when pushed too hot. The roast matters too. A lighter, fruitier espresso can be flattened by whole milk but lifted by oat. Above all, the size of the drink matters, since the smaller the cup, the more the coffee wins.

So where do we land?

Somewhere firmly in the middle. We order whichever one matches the mood of the day. Oat goes in a flat white when we want something a little sweeter. Whole milk goes in a cortado when we want the espresso front and centre. Neither is the correct answer, which is precisely why the argument never ends.
